Dick Anderson, President of the Maine Chapter IAT/SIA and Roxanne Quimby, President of Elliotsville Plantation Inc.(EPI), the owner of  land in T3 R8, T3 R7, T4 R7 and  T4 R7 recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) which allows the development of the IAT/SIA from Wassataquoik Stream to the north boundary of EPI land in T4 R8. The MOU allows a campsite at Lunksoos Mountain and a trail that will pass over both Lunksoos and Deasey Mountains. Total trail mileage, covered by the MOU, is approximately 10 miles.

This is a great step forward in completing the Maine section of the IAT/SIA in the East-of-Baxter area. The trail includes some nice mountain hiking and spectacular views of Katahdin and the other mountains in Baxter State Park. The trail also passes through several stands of spectacular, old growth hardwoods and softwoods.

One section of this trail is located on the historic fire lookout trail on Deasey Mountain and another section is located on the old Wassataquoik Tote Road(also called the Appalachian Trail in the 18 hundreds).

The layout of the trail will provide the public with some wonderful opportunities to enjoy a large area of undeveloped forestland.

Maine Chapter members plan to complete the Lunksoos Mountain Campsite this fall and the rest of the trail will be cleared and marked by summer of 2008.

The picture above taken at the signing by Maine Chapter Board member Earl Raymond includes Chapter Treasurer, Bob LeMieux; Chapter President, Dick Anderson; Roxanne Quimby; and Chapter Secretary, Don Hudson.

The MOU is attached for those that are interested.
