Press Release

International Appalachian Trail (IATNL) is successful securing funding for trail development and marketing.

The International Appalachian Trail Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter (IATNL) has secured funding totaling $148,000 for the development of approx. 275KM of trail to be completed in the western region by the end of this work season.  With the assistance of funding partners including Service Canada, Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, Bay St. George Task Force, College of the North Atlantic and tourism industry memberships, the trail development will open the West Coast of the province to potentially millions of walkers and hikers along the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. At the end of the 2007 construction season, IATNL will have completed a continuous walking trail from Fischell’s River in the southwest to Deer Lake (195KM), and a large section of trail (80KM) between the northern border of Gros Morne National Park and Portland Creek.

Incorporated in 2003 as a not-for-profit organization with the goal of developing a connected walking trail system along the spine of the Long Range Mountains in Western Newfoundland, the IATNL is working with its many volunteers, community, business and governmental partners to create a superb hiking destination in Eastern North America.  Considered "the last northern vestige of the Appalachian Mountains in North America”, the Newfoundland and Labrador section of the IAT, when complete, will have over 1200KM of developed trail.
