New Section of IATNL on Northern Peninsula Completed
Friends and Members of the IATNL, A new and critical section of the IATNL on the Northern Peninsula was completed last week after a 5 day backcountry trail cutting expedition.

Three US volunteers, a local trail worker and myself flew into the backcountry behind Parsons Pond to cut a trail up and over a critical mountain pass linking the mountains north and south of Parsons Pond Inner Pond (a half-size version of "Western Brook Pond").  Although we encountered MANY flies and wet working conditions, we exceeded expectations in finding and developing an easy trail route over difficult terrain.

We are now able to bring the IATNL south to Western Brook (of Parsons Pond) where we can add another IATNL access point to and from Route 430 (the Viking Trail), and potentially beyond into Gros Morne National Park.

I'd like to take this opportunity to belatedly thank Keith Payne for his tips on St. Paul's Inlet on a previous trek back in July.  If the management of Gros Morne National Park are co-operative, we now have a viable and scenic mountain trail route from Portland Creek to St. Paul's Inlet.

Below are photos taken last week behind Parsons Pond Inner Pond in the area of the new trail section, and in Western Brook (of Parsons Pond) during the two day walk out.
