International Appalachian Trail
Stanton Bird Club Presentation
WalterAnderson and Dick Anderson combined talents to give an exciting presentation on the history and geology of the IAT/SIA to the Stanton Bird Club on February 4. Walter gave the attendees a short lesson on plate tectonics, explaining the break-up of the Appalachian Mountains as Pangaea was separated at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge 80 million years ago. He used a map to show the distribution of Appalachian terrains throughout the North Atlantic.

Dick described the origins of the IT/SIA, from the Joe Brennan news conference on Earth Day 1994 to the present. He showed slides that covered the present length of the trail from Katahdin to Cow Head, Newfoundland.

The event was held at the Auburn Public Library in Auburn, Maine. The audience of 75 outdoor oriented people was excited to learn about the IAT/SIA and many questions followed the presentations. Several attendees told Walter and Dick that they planned to explore some of the landscape through which the trail passes, in the future. As always, there was great interest in the free, printed materials that were available.

The accompanying photographs are of Dick, Walter and Susan Hayward, President of the Stanton Bird Club and the large audience that attended the presentation.
