Successful Wassataquoik Work Trip
A very productive, but soaking rain-shortened work trip to the site of the Wassataquiok Stream shelter took place September 24-27. Participants included Dick and Walter Anderson, Earl Raymond, Roger Gilmore, Torrey Sylvester Dave Rand, Herb Hartman, Paul Messier, Bob Johnson, Mark Loisell, and Eric Horschak.
A large, three-sided shelter was constructed with the exception of a section of the floor and few front roof panels that remain to installed; a fire ring and a privy were completed; the trail section from the col between Lunksoos and Deasey mountains to the summit of Deasey was upgraded and marked; the roof of the fire lookout on the summit of Deasey was repaired and the “I” bolt on one of the cables holding down the lookout was replaced; a trail route along the north side of Wassataquoik as far as the historic fording site was marked; the trail was partially cleared from the Sandbank Road down to the ford; sign posts with IAT/SIA blazes and directional arrows were several intersections.
A small work party will return to the area later this month to complete the lean-to, place two more signs at intersections, and finish marking and clearing 2000’ of trail along the north side of Wassataquoik Stream.
