PEI Welcomes Its First IAT Thru-Hiker
On Monday, 12 July 2010, Lucy Leaf, our first PEI IAT (International Appalachian Trail) Thru-Hiker, arrived in Borden Carlton to hike PEI’s Confederation Trail and PEI’s IAT Dromore Trails. Lucy was on her way, hiking the IAT trails, to North Sydney, Nova Scotia, having completed Maine's section of the trail prior to arriving on PEI. The IAT is a 3,000 km hiking trail route stretching from Mount Katahdin, Maine, through New Brunswick to the Gaspé region of Québec, then to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the west coast of the Island of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Having hiked Maine's 130 miles (210 kms.) of the IAT, (read Lucy's account of her Maine IAT Hike at http://www.internationalatmaine.org/pages/MaineIAT_News/0148E463-001D0211.) Lucy arrived by bus from Perth-Andover, NB in Borden Carleton about mid-afternoon on Monday, the 12th July. She started hiking the Confederation Trail and at the end of the first day hiked to almost Kinkora, approx. 10 kms.. The second day, Tuesday, she hiked from Kinkora to Hunter River, approx. 28 kms. Having hiked Wednesday from Hunter River to Winsloe, 20 kms., Lucy took time to visit Charlottetown to buy new footwear for the trail and to see some of the sights. On Thursday morning, 15th July, accompanied by Barb Trainor, President, and Denis Dunne, Past
President, of Island Trails, Lucy hiked our IAT Dromore Trails, 14 kms, the first IAT thru-hiker to do so. After the Dromore hike she took time to travel to Blooming Point so she may experience our famous beaches and dunes. Lucy then traveled to Winsloe so she may continue her hike east on the Confederation Trail to Wood Islands and the NFL Ferry to Nova Scotia. On the way, she plans to hike to St. Peters Bay, 55 kms., and then to the Greenwich National Park, where she hopes to take a swim and walk its beautiful beach. She will then hike by road and reconnect with the Confederation Trail at Cardigan, 24 kms., to Montague, 12 kms., and then to Murray River, 11 kms., to Wood Islands, 16 kms., for her ferry ride to Caribou, Nova Scotia and the continuation of her IAT thru-hike to North Sydney, almost 465 kms.
While Lucy has only been hiking for the past five years or so, she has a very interesting life of traveling long distance having gone by dog team across Labrador on two occasions in the ninety's and by horse back across the USA from Maine to Montana, to Calfornia and then back to North Virgina in the seventy's. She has promised to forward copies of her publicized articles of her travels when she arrives back in Maine.
